Mathematics (and Joint Honours)

Mathematics is essential for science and society, and it is present in every discipline and every industry. It is arguably in a golden age and mathematicians are more in demand today than ever before.

This is also reflected in the wide variety of jobs that our former students have gone on to after finishing their degree, including finance, IT, law, media, medicine, teaching and indeed academia.

We admit students for both three–year and four–year courses, and also take students for the joint courses Maths and Statistics, Maths and Computer Science (about which you can learn more on the Computer Science page)and Maths and Philosophy. Although Maths and Philosophy is a small subject within the University, our tutors in both subjects are keen to encourage it, and the College has always had a steady number of students studying for this joint course.

At Magdalen we usually admit four undergraduates each year to read Mathematics (including one for Maths and Statistics), two for the joint course in Maths and Computer Science and one for Maths and Philosophy. We are keen to attract outstanding students who are willing to invest time and energy in a challenging course.

Tutorials in Mathematics are given by Julien Berestycki, whose research is in probability, Jan Kristensen, whose research is in analysis, and David Cox, who specialises in applied mathematics and also works in a local school.
